In a press statement, the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights said the meeting focused on the file of searching for and returning of Kuwaiti missing in action (MIAs) as a result of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

It quoted Al-Sudani as saying that great strides were made in the efforts exerted to close this file.

He lauded the extraordinary efforts exerted by the tripartite committee and its technical subcommittee to resolve the issue and determine the fate of missing Kuwaitis. The Minister welcomed the UN joining of the committee. For his part, Busztin, who has recently visited Kuwait and held talks with Kuwaiti officials, pointed to closeness in the stances of the both sides towards missing Kuwaitis file.

He stated that Kuwaiti officials greatly appreciate the constructive cooperation and efforts of the Iraqi government in handling this important issue.

The UN official lauded the recent Iraqi government’s initiative to publish ads in local press asking people to provide the government with any piece of information they have about any missing Kuwaiti. He hoped the initiative would bear fruit and reveal the fate of some of the missing Kuwaitis.

Busztin urged the tripartite to intensify its meetings to speed up the pace of achievement in the file.
